Who's Laughing Now?

9 April 2009

I love humor and the ability to laugh. I believe it’s one of God’s creative gifts to us all. A good laugh can be almost medicinal and it makes me feel better during and after. It has always been my contention that people in general take themselves and life way too seriously. Granted there are certain situations that require our serious attention but not nearly as many as most people seem to adhere to.

I also believe that if Christians can not laugh who can then in light of an eternal perspective. Our ability to laugh and enjoy life in my mind is part of what Jesus meant when He said in John 10:10 he had come to give life and life more abundantly. Life to be enjoyed as it was divinely created.

Yet we can take this too far and rather quickly if we begin laughing AT people and especially their spiritual empty-ness. As “cute” as the above cartoon is, it also reveals a sad condition of people without Christ. People who are spiritually lost and for the most part do not know it. That fact alone should sober us up and do all that we can to point them to Christ. We who call ourselves Christ followers are no better than anyone else we have just been forgiven and become acutely aware of His grace. Therefore we should be grace dispensers in sharing that good news with others and not laughing at their expense.

Break my heart Lord for the things that break your heart.
