Battle Ship vs Cruise Ship

A smart fellow once compared the church of today with either of two kinds of ships. One, a cruise ship, has the purpose of catering to the personal whims of passengers. Whatever they want, they get. The ship offers a wide menu of choices and activities to entertain its guests and to ensure their return for another cruise in the future.

Battle Ship vs Cruise Ship

The second vessel is a battleship. Its purpose is totally different. Every sailor has his or her job to do, station to maintain, or mission to serve. No one on a battleship gets catered or pampered or entertained. Each has responsibility.

Most churches today are like cruise ships, not battleships. They are designed for the enjoyment of their members, who cherry-pick what they want from a wide menu of choices, activities and excursions – all optional. Pick what you want, leave what you don’t , have fun along the way, and, by all means, come back next week.

Few churches are battleships, with the expectation and demand for all hands to be on deck, because there are responsibilities to be done and a mission to be fulfilled.

This excellent model that illustrates churches of today should be in the forefront of our minds as we move forward with our three-year ministry plan, which you can find on this website. Click the link to read it and see what we see as our mission.

Should churches be about serving passengers or serving the mission? We’ve already decided which choice is for us.
