Assassins
14 April 2009
We have all been intrigued lately of the covert rescue of the ship captain from Somalian pirates by the Navy Seals. Their secret rescue is what they do by profession but for all of us “non-Seals” we are enamored as well as impressed with their tactics. Their stealth operation comes across so heroic as it should along with their precision in taking out their targets.
That reminded me of a book I was given about a month ago entitled Deadly Viper- Character Assassins by Mike Foster and Jud Wilhite. (see www.deadlyviper.org) Using a ninja-kung fu theme they present the reader with legitimate concerns regarding a number of character assassins that can sneak up without any warning and can take us out just as quickly.
“In this book we’ll introduce you to seven mortal enemies, the assassination squad. We refer to them as the Deadly Viper Character Assassins. Who are these kung fu killers? They are bloodthirsty hit-men lurking in the shadows plotting to undermine your leadership, integrity and success. …and because of their stealth MO, we often don’t see them till it’s too late. By then, they’re chopping us up into sushi rolls and folding us into puny cream cheese wontons.”
The book I believe is geared toward a more male audience but certainly a good read for most people particularly those of us who call ourselves Christ-followers. Too often we think we are immune to such an attack or those kind of issues only happen to other people and not us. As often is the case our pride hinders our effectiveness as a witness. For us to continue to remain alert we need reminders like this book offers as well as having at least a few people in our lives who we can be gut-level honest with. People who love us just for us that we can speak freely with regarding issues like…
• What are the big and nasty issues lurking out there ready to take us down?
• What are those stupid choices we are on the verge of making that would deliver a knockout blow and wreck our lives?
• How could we help each other be healthier leaders and find true meaning in our lives? (Deadly Vipers page 9)
Here’s to all of us being more on the alert for assassins that want to take us down and out. May we become more attentive to life’s attacks and even more committed to live the life that God has called of us to live.
